Natural Rubber Possess high elastic properties which holds to be true even after recycling the primary product. Generally used & damaged rubber tyres & tubes are powdered or reclaimed & used again. Other Products such as Rubber mats, Footwear, gaskets, sports goods, car & door mats, anti vibration pads are manufactured using up to 100% recycled compound. Although scientists are not yet completely successful in converting used  rubber product in original raw state but still able to attain atleast 60% features of virgin Compound.


Tyre/Tube Recycling procedure:

Used tyres are first washed with water based biodegradable preparation then send to the shredder, which have two rolls of large teeth this grinds up the tyre in small pieces of  few inch size. Metal pieces present in it are magnetically separated which are send to other factory for recycling. Other ingredients of tyre such as nylon & fibreglass are also need to be separated, they use a shifter to remove unwanted matter.  Remaining Rubber particles counts up to 2.5mm size, which further supplied to second shredder to be reduced to  smaller particles, The final product is fine Power like material which is mix with Raw rubber & compounded to make new Rubber Products.


The general procedure of recycling Tube is also similar but the final product is not power as in case of tyre rather sheets called reclaimed Sheets. The shredded pieces of tube are churn on mixing mill by adding Synthetic oil the doe thus obtained are put in a vulcanized & jet of steam is passed for few hours  under certain pressure. The final product is passed though Calendar machine & thin sheets are prepared & packed.


Why it is Important:

With the increment in Automobiles & industrial cranes Recycling rubber is very important both environmentally & economically. Thousands are worn out tyre are thrown each day which otherwise would be a disaster for Nature.

Uses of Rubber & Its Derivatives

Like metals & non metallic products, we are dependent for Elastomeric Products a lot. Knowingly or unknowingly we have a greater importance of Rubber Products in our Life. Some of them are summed up below.

Anti Abrasive & highly elastic Natural Rubber sheets are used in Sports utilities such as in tennis balls, Table Tennis rackets, Foot Ball, Volleyball, Basketball, squash balls.

Rescue Boats, Life Boats, Gliders, Under water Diving Suits, Parasuits, Gum Boots are generally made from Hyplon or Neoprene Coated Fabrics, fabricated in desired shape, fabric gives strength to Rubber.

Electrical Safety Mats, Safety Shoes, Hand Gloves are made from EPDM or NBR Rubber Compound. Often, devices are rubber coating knowing the face Rubber is a bad conductor of electricity.

So many day to day use items such as Purses, wallets, Slippers, door mats, Flooring, Wipers, Tyres & tubes, Waist Belt uses rubber in one way or the other.

Industrial application of rubber & its derivates are abundant such as gaskets, packing seals, beading, hoses, V-belts, Rubber Sheets, Conveyor belts, Rollers, stamps.

There are several substitutes for metals, plastics are known but hardly any for Rubber. Over past decades Science & technology have taken a gigantic leap, changing the way we used to see things but Elastomer whether natural or artificial kept their importance unchallenged.

Synthetic Polymer for Manufacturing Industries

Industrial Revolution brings a drastic growing demand for raw metallic & Non-metallic materials. The growing demand  in-turn laid huge burden on Natural resources which of course are limited. Therefore, Synthetic or Artificially processed Polymers come alive. These are developed on a basic principle that’s polymerization of a monomer unit. Neoprene Polymer formed by Chloroprene monomer is a known example for Elastomer Technologists.

Automobile Industry developed at a remarkable rate for past two decades internationally. This mark foundation for super fast growing auto components market. Large Scale Government & Public governed Steel & other ferrous & Non-ferrous establishments are its result. Non-metallic industry on the other end diverted more towards synthetic alternative for raw material because demand for natural resources exceeds availability.

Rubber Tyre which keep Industrial machinery moving, switched from Natural Rubber to Synthetic alternatives such as  Neoprene, Silicone, EPDM, Nitrile, Viton. Tyre Manufacturers shifted from traditionally using 100% Natural to 0-50% Natural rest Synthetic. This hold to be true for other associated Industries like those manufacturing Hoses, Sheets & Mats. This serves bi-directionally, first decrease dependency on Natural Rubber & second now we have a better alternative, as each polymer can be customized to serve a more specific purpose, like-

  1. Neoprene or Chloroprene Rubber Compound is ideal for Petroleum products, ageing, heat, oil.
  2. Silicone can resist very High temperature, up to +250 degrees centigrade.
  3. EPDM is known for abrasion & whether resistance properties.
  4. Nitrile is best suited for Electric Current resistance, thus use in manufacturing of Shock proof Insulating Matting.

Forthcoming field in terms of Rubber Consumption is Sheet,  Matting & Hose Industry. Vulcanized & Processed by means of calendaring & roto-curing layers of Rubber compound of the order of new millimetres (0.1mm to 50mm in general) are called Rubber Sheets. Matting on the other hand are comparatively thick & more hardened sheets which mostly have an anti-skid embossed or Fluted surface on top.
